Changes Ahead
The UK has already set targets to ensure that all plastic packaging must be either recyclable, reusable, or compostable by the year 2025. Even before then, HMRC is set to impose a Plastic Packaging Tax in 2022 on all items containing less than 30% recycled content. The cost and complexity involved in meeting these targets should not be underestimated and producers will need to set interim benchmarks so that their progress towards these can be measured in clear unambiguous ways.
