The Packaging Waste regulations, known as The Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 2007 (as amended), work on the principal of common responsibility. This means that all businesses producing or using packaging [Producers] should contribute towards the cost of recycling and recovery.
The regulations place binding obligations on Packaging producers in the UK and although these have evolved over time, their primary aim remains unchanged. That is to;
- Reduce the amount of packaging produced in the first place
- Reduce how packaging waste going to landfill
- Increase the rate of recycling and recovery of packaging waste
