My business is obligated - What next?

Each year, obligated companies must register or be registered via a compliance scheme as a packaging producer with the environmental regulator, Environment Agency. Companies must submit annual data returns on their packaging activities to calculate their obligation which translates into a fee to be paid.

A Company’s obligation is calculated based on;

  • Quantity and material reported
  • Activities carried out
  • Current UK recycling targets

Obligation costs are charged by material though the purchase of Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs) and are based on open market prices, therefore, can fluctuate throughout the year. This can have large financial implications for businesses in terms of budgeting and cost, therefore it is key to ensure the data reported is accurate.

Compiling data is different for every company and it can be cumbersome and overwhelming.
