Solar powered street bins?! Created

A tweet caught my attention today about Solar powered bins. I was intrigued and then surprised to read on BBC news that Cambridgeshire County council are trialing Solar powered street bins.

They're 3 x more expensive that regular bins (I can't believe regular street bins cost £1k!!!) but it looks like that money gives a number of benefits. I thought I'd see plenty of solar powered street furniture like signs, bus stops, lighting etc in the not too distant future, but I didn't think Solar powered bins would be in there!

Have you spotted any street furniture powered by renewable energy near you? Post a pic and let's see if we can top bins!

In Kingston there are a number of Pay and Display machines that have solar panels. It's not necessarily to save on electricity costs but to save on the cost of getting the electricity companies to connect them up.

The bus 'flags' around here are also often have solar panels on the top. They provide illumination for the bus time tables. http://www.zetasolar.com/cs_bus_stop.html

One that you may not have heard about is the solar-powered bench in Richmond Park (Poets' Corner), near Pembroke Lodge. The small panels power an i-pod type thing in each arm that you can plug you ear phones into and hear Ian Dury on Desert Island Discs on one side. Can't recall exactly what's on the other arm of the bench - one of his albums I think.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/1958039.stm

http://www.guide2richmond.com/information/119/The-Ian-Dury-Musical-Bench-in-Richmond-Park
