Centre for Alternative Technology, July 2010 Created

In July 2010, I returned to the Centre for Alternative Technology, in Machynlleth to learn more about Renewable Energy.  Stuart Labrum and David Hood took on an eager class of around 30 and shared their wisdom on renewable energy systems.

It was a facinating week and I learnt all about hydro systems, wind, PV, thermal and a bit about biomass and heat pumps too!

Not only is it a great practical way to expand your knowledge, it's fantastic for networking with other people from different backgrounds and cultures (there were Brazilians, Indians, South Africans in the group).

And I got to stay in the fantastic new WISE centre

CAT is open to visitors, for short courses or you can complete an MSc (these are in high demand!).  Visit the CAT website to find out more about this wonderful place!!

I'm a bit dubious about turbines fixed to buildings! Seems to go against all the rules about locating a wind turbine and getting the best return!

They still have those same 'do it yourself' solar thermal kits! I (badly) put one together and managed to get about 16deg. I'll dig out a piccie... I took lots when I was there!

If you do visit again, I can safely say you'll be impressed with the WISE centre!

I was there with some friends back in 1990, or was it 1989. I most vividly recall the designs of home-made solar hot water panels using radiator panels painted black. They may not have been very efficient, but a quick google finds some sites with loads of information on how to make your own, e.g.: www.builditsolar.com

I also recall that wind turbines were a pretty exciting thing to see generating electricity. Seems that a lot of the excitement about domestic wind power has faded since all the stories about David Cameron having one fixed on his home. www.reuk.co.uk/David-Cameron-Wind-Turbine-Finally-Installed.htm

Tracy,

This sounds a great place to visit, out in wilderness! I think there's so much to benefit from learning about renewable technology hands on rather than just from from a text book!
