I am really interested in finding out how efficient your measures have been for your flood lights. We have many sports facilities in london which are not always used to the max and it would be great to think, if they were flood lit, they could be carbon neutral. Cheers for any feedback.xxx

Problems with Solar Thermal? 4 Answers

As we've been having stalls with information about energy saving about micro-generation, we've met quite a number of people who are have had solar thermal panels installed but are experiencing problems with their system. One woman has already gone to such expense to try and solve problems without success that she has decided to take down the solar thermal panels and invest in solar pv instead! Does anyone have any insight into why people are experiencing difficulties? We live in an area with hard water - should they have been advised to have fltering put into their water system? Is it just a case of choosing a really reputable company? If the word gets round about difficulties, it will put people off investing, which would be a shame.

Lighting display 1 Answer

I would like to buy a lighting display. Ideally it would be a long box that has five or 6 fittings on the top and small digital power meters below each fitting, each with its own switch. The idea being that we can take it to schools, meeting and events and let people try different light bulbs to see how much power they use, what the light quality is like and how much each bulb costs. Like an interactive try-before-you-buy display.

Has anybody seen one before, got any ideas where I could find one (or commission somebody to make one?) and do you think people would find it useful?

Many thanks

community solar panels? 1 Answer

In our community, there is a tiny village which would like to have invest in generating their own electricity. Because planning is so difficult, they've given up on the idea of wind, but how might it work with solar PV? Of course, they could do it as an investment for the feed-in tarrif, and the electricity could just go back into the grid, but would it be very impractical and costly to have it so that the houses also share the electricity to their homes? Are there any examples of this? I know there's one example in the Green Streets project, where the electricity will go from one side of the road to the other (town hall to school, I think), but would multiple properties be impossible?

Should PTAs invest in solar panels on school roofs? 1 Answer

Now that the country has so much debt is it realistic for parents to expect the government or grants to put green technology onto school roofs? PTAs do a fantastic job of raising money for their children at the school. Parents clearly care so much about their children's futures and have payed for pools, buildings and much more. Could a deal be done with the councils ( who ever pays for the electricity when it comes from the grid) to ensure that the school still gets the money ( maybe they could pay back the PTA) . The feed back tariff makes it an investment as well.

How do I make my open plan living room / dining room kitchen as energy efficient as possible? 3 Answers

I'm in the middle of major renovation on my 1930's mid-terraced house - having an extension built to my kitchen, then knocking down three walls so that nearly the whole of the downstairs is open plan.

I'm thinking beyond the dust and grime to the best ways to make it as energy efficient as possible. I've already had cavity wall insulation put into the newly extended area and am replacing all my double glazing, but does anyone have any other bright (but preferably inexpensive) ideas as to what else I could do?

Thanks!
