Recycling in Runnymede borough
by user1576 published on 31st March 2010 at 19:45

Hi everyone,

I live in the Runnymede borough council area. My glass, paper and tins are the only items which are collected for recycling once a week. It's a shame cardboard and plastic bottles aren't collect as it seems crazy that I have to make a journey to my local recycling plant and use my car, thus increasing my carbon emissions.

Does anyone else have this issue with their recycling?

Oxfordshire now collect paper, card and plastic but I worry that because it is not sorted separately that they may not be handling it correctly. Does anyone know how I can find out? Thinking about it I can probably contact the council and ask them what the process is.

Hi Helen,

It does seem crazy that there's such variation between councils as to how recycling is carried out - surely there could be 'best practice' identified, and all councils follow that?

If people have to take their own recycling to recycling points, apart from the extra carbon footprint of car journeys, the reality is that so many more people will find that a disincentive enough not to do it.  Plus, I not infrequently find the recycling points overflowing, with bags dumped all around on the ground - then you don't know what to do!

bg-lucy makes the crucial point, I guess - that we should contact our councils about our concerns!!
