Time to reduce the hours that street lamps are on?
by jon-fray published on 8th September 2010 at 13:05I see that one newspaper and some MPs are making an issue of the idea of switching off some street lamps in the early hours (midnight to 05:30) of the morning. In the vanguard seem to be Leicestershire County Council who estimate a saving of 3,000 tonnes of CO2 - equivalent to the Carbon emissions from 5,500 homes and saving around £700,000 into the bargain.
It seems to me that this may be a good idea if it doesn't have an effect on road safety or personal safety. It'll be interesting to see how this is received by the communites where this is being done. Schemes for Sapcote, Thurlaston and Stoney Stanton appear to have been approved.
